Less than two weeks ago I visited Anderson Valley, deep in Mendocino County. In the “small hamlet of Philo (less than 400 population), I found the tasting room for Drew Winery owned by Jason and Molly Moore with the actual winery near the coast to the west. Jason is a well respected winemaker who has made wine for the past twenty years.
My immediate (I want to get some of this) was their Albarino which retails for $25, and comes from one of two plantings in Mendocino County (Mendocino Ridge) and Valente. Great flavors, great balance and a delight to taste.
The 2009 Syrah (13.7% alcohol) is grown six miles from the ocean, and would be great with venison, although not as big as most syrah seem to be these days. This is a $40 winner.
